Focus on the knee joint

The knee is the largest joint in the body. It includes three bones: the thigh bone, the kneecap and the shinbone, plus two menisci, two condyles and several tendons and ligaments. The knee is one of the most complex joints and has a key role for everyday functions: walking, sitting, standing, running, jumping… It also supports the body weight, absorbs the shocks of walking and helps to stabilise the body.

What are the types of knee pain?

Due to the plurality of structures within this joint, the knee can suffer many problems and many types of pain. It can be about a cartilage, meniscus, muscle, ligament or tendon lesion and cause back of knee pain, pain on side, in front, above or below the kneecap.

What are the major causes of knee joint pain?

There is a large amount of knee problems: tendonitis, patellofemoral pain syndrome, arthritis, cysts, fracture, luxation, instability, sprain, chondromalacia, anterior cruciate ligament injury, meniscus tear…

Note that many of these knee pains are caused by sports practice. Indeed, some sports involve harmful and brutal movements which are continuously repeated.
